By Jennifer Heinen | Fashion Psychologist

Have you ever wondered how your clothing choices impact your mood, confidence, and even your environmental footprint? We're thrilled to delve into the world of sustainable fashion with Charlotte Piller, co-founder of Lotta Ludwigson, who will share her journey, insights, and actionable tips on making fashion choices that are not only stylish but also kind to our planet.

Known for their innovative approach to sustainable fashion, Charlotte shares her journey, the ethos behind her brand, and her vision for the future of fashion.

The Birth of Lotta Ludwigson

Lotta Ludwigson, founded by Charlotte Piller and Nhu-Ha Dao, is more than just a fashion brand. It’s a statement, a mission to bring sustainability to the forefront of the fashion industry.

Charlotte's journey into sustainable fashion began during her master's in innovation and entrepreneurship at a business school in Copenhagen. There, she discovered how entrepreneurship could be a powerful tool for change, particularly in solving societal problems. "I thought, okay, now I know how the tool works and now I would like to apply it," she recalls.

"The fashion industry has so, so many problems. I think, yeah, name an issue, fashion has it."

Challenges and Triumphs

Charlotte and her team at Lotta Ludwigson faced numerous challenges in creating truly sustainable fashion. From developing compostable shoulder pads to ensuring all fabrics were dyed without toxic chemicals, the journey was not easy. "We had to create the very first shoulder pads that are compostable without any polyester at all," she explains. "This took us one and a half years already."

Their approach to sustainability is comprehensive, embracing the cradle-to-cradle design philosophy. This method ensures that every component of their products can either be fully recycled or biodegrade naturally. "It's about taking responsibility for the products you create until they are no longer used and beyond," Charlotte emphasizes.

Empowering Women Through Fashion

One of the brand's core missions is to empower women through their clothing. "My dream is to really empower women in their daily lives when they wear a Lotta Ludwigson piece," Charlotte says. She believes that the right outfit can transform a woman's confidence and energy, helping her to achieve her dreams. "If you don't feel well in the morning, you're stressed out, you have a busy day ahead, but then you go to your closet, see this color block suit, put it on, and your entire attitude changes."

The Impact of Sustainable Fashion

Charlotte’s vision extends beyond individual empowerment to making a broader impact on the environment and the community. Lotta Ludwigson supports initiatives in Nepal that produce menstrual pads from banana fibers, helping women and girls stay in their communities during menstruation. "We can have an impact even beyond clothes," she asserts.

The Future of Fashion

Looking ahead, Charlotte envisions a future where Lotta Ludwigson expands geographically and influences more significant change within the fashion industry. She hopes to inspire larger corporations to adopt similar sustainable practices, creating a ripple effect of positive change. "We get approached by really big corporates interested in our cradle-to-cradle philosophy," she notes.

Style My Mind Challenge

Inspired by Charlotte's commitment to sustainability and personal empowerment, we present the Style My Mind Challenge: Document your outfits over a month. Take pictures or note what pieces you wear daily. At the end, review your go-to pieces, materials, and colors. Share your journey with #StyleMyMindChallenge. This exercise will help you understand your style better and make more informed, sustainable fashion choices.
